The physical benefits of yoga start with increased flexibility and strength. The strategic movements help to strengthen as well as lengthen muscles which will continue throughout the duration of the practice. The flexibility also will provide a wider range of motion which will cut down on injuries. By learning to slow down and do each movement properly your balance will increase and it can help to lower blood pressure.
The mental benefits of yoga include clearer thinking. Part of yoga practice is focusing on each movement and your breath. Over time you will learn how to clear your mind and be able to have increased focus in all parts of your daily life. Another mental benefit is boosted confidence. After you successfully hold a pose that you have been working on for months you will see your progress and all of the hard work pay off.
